The thermostat controls the flow of coolant into your engine based on temperature. When the engine is started, the thermostat remains closed to accelerate the warm up process. After reaching operating temperature, it opens up to allow the coolant through to the engine block. If your vehicle is overheating but not blowing warm air from the heater, the problem could be a thermostat that is stuck closed.
